The Effect of Fuel Prices on Trucking Industry’s Network Characteristics 340

Project Number: 340

Project Leader: Megeresa Abate

Start Date: 2013-10-01

End Date: 2014-03-31

Research Question This project examines how changes in fuel prices shape the trucking industry’s network characteristics such as the average length of haul, average load, and capacity utilization. It proposes an empirical model which is based on the central arguments that during periods of high fuel prices firms reduce average length of hauls, that is the average distance a tonne of freight moves, and improve capacity utilization. The model will be tested using a unique dataset from the Danish heavy goods vehicle (HGV) trip diary for 2004 to 2011.
